What it does
Iodine is the raw material your thyroid uses to build the hormones that govern your metabolism, energy, and, during pregnancy, a baby's brain development. Too little slows everything down. Many people who've cut back on iodized salt or dairy get less than they think, while too much can also disrupt the thyroid, so balance is key.
The science
Iodine is required for synthesis of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which regulate metabolism, development, and energy production.
Most relevant for
Low-salt or dairy-free diets, and anyone trying to conceive or pregnant.
